Recruiting for my last season as Predators' head coach did not go well at all. None of the three excellent big men targeted chose to come to Long Beach, leaving the team without an established center and without much height off the bench. As for the recruits who did come, 6'7" Matthew Carrasco is a pretty good all-around player who could fill spot-starter duty at SF, or else at least be a dependable frontcourt reserve. 6'8" John Hartsell actually came in better than expected, and should get plenty of reserve minutes off the bench. But the third member of the class was 6'5" walk-on Daniel Smith, who will probably never see the floor in any real game action. The class was poorly rated at 67/125.
The Predators' final entry in the Preseason Twonament resulted in disappointment, with only 1 win in the 3 round-robin games. The Preds lost narrowly to St. Paul by four points in the opening game, but were knocked out with a whimper, embarrassingly falling to the defending national champions from Twin Falls by forty, and scoring only 36 points in the entire game. The week was salvaged with a 77-75 win over Buffalo in the meaningless finale.
GAME SNAPSHOTS
FORT WORTH (L 91-51)
Bryan Moreno - 15 Points, 8 Turnovers. The Predators were thoroughly outclassed in the opener. The Beavers hit 9 three-pointers, had a 20-3 advantage at the free throw line, and a 35-24 Rebounding Edge. The Preds turned the ball over an astounding 24 times. Fort Worth also outscored
Long Beach 43-14 in the Second Half, and 21-2 over the last ten minutes.
ARLINGTON (L 84-83)
Curtis Burrell - 32 Points, 14/19 Shooting; Bryan Moreno - 22 Points, 7/9 Shooting. The Predators wound up shooting 59% for the game, but could not overcome a 31-22 Rebounding Shortfall and a 14-point halftime deficit in which they gave up 52 Points in the opening 20 minutes. Reuben Canfield got the Preds
within one with just over a minute to play, but he missed the last shot at the buzzer.
INDEPENDENCE (L 81-77)
Curtis Burrell - 20 Points, 4 Rebounds, 9/13 Shooting; Kevin Wilkinson - 19 Points, 6 Rebounds. The Predators shot 53% for the game, outrebounded an opponent for the first time all season, and had a 7-point lead at halftime. But they went through a five-minute drought midway through the Second Half without a single
point, which allowed the Peanuts to creep back and take the lead. Independence also hit 25/34 free throws, compared to just 6/13 for Long Beach.
EUGENE (L 84-70)
Curtis Burrell - 22 Points, 4 Assists; John Hartsell - 13 Points in 10 Minutes off the bench. The Predators clawed back after falling behind by 19 points in the First Half and were down only 4 early in the Second Half, but couldn't get a defensive stop down the stretch. The Ducks shot 54% for the game and hit 19/25 FT's, while the Preds
hit just 4/5 from the free throw line. The Predators began a season with four straight losses for the first time in my 16 seasons as coach. The Preds had not been 0-3 since Season 29.
OLYMPIA (W 73-65)
Curtis Burrell - 17 Points, 7/15 Shooting; John Hartsell - 15 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals; Kevin Wilkinson - 12 Points, 11 Rebounds. Olympia shot only 40% and turned the ball over 14 times. The Predators led by 14 at halftime and never let the Chum get closer than 5 over the last ten minutes to finally pick up their first win of the season. The Preds'
1-4 record only earned them an initial ranking of #179, the lowest opening rank the team has ever had.
ROSWELL (W 84-56)
Bryan Moreno - 22 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Steals; John Hartsell - 18 Points, 5 Rebounds; Curtis Burrell - 15 Points, 4 Rebounds. The Predators dominated in rebounding for the first time all season (41-28) and outscored Roswell 38-20 in the Second Half.
CULVER CITY (W 80-65)
Bryan Moreno - 17 Points, 4 Rebounds, 3 Assists; Ben Maddocks - 14 Points on 6/8 Shooting in 16 Minutes off the bench; Team - 53% Shooting, 36-23 Rebounding Edge. The Predators trailed the winless Jombinators at halftime, but went on an 11-3 run early in the Second Half to create some separation. Long Beach wound up outscoring Culver City
43-25 after the intermission.
SALEM (W 76-74)
Curtis Burrell - 21 Points, 3 Assists; Bryan Moreno - 17 Points, 4 Rebounds; Ronald Brown - 6 Points, 12 Rebounds, 2 Blocks. The Predators made 15 of 16 free throw attempts and hammered the Spavins with a 40-23 rebounding edge. Salem erased an 11-point Second Half deficit and had the game tied three times in the last three minutes, but
Moreno's jumper with 1:32 remaining turned out to be the final points of the game. Salem's Jeffrey Sperry scored 25 points, but missed his team's last shot with 7 seconds left.
CARSON CITY (W 95-60)
Bryan Moreno - 22 Points, 3 Assists; John Hartsell - 20 Points, 5 Rebounds; Curtis Burrell - 16 Points, 2 Assists, 2 Steals; Team - 51% Shooting, 20/23 FT's, Forced 18 Turnovers. The Predators began the game on a 23-8 run and led by 20 at Halftime. The Preds then outscored the Kingmambos 46-31 after the intermission.
SALT LAKE CITY (W 79-67)
Curtis Burrell - 29 Points, 12/17 Shooting; Bryan Moreno - 12 Points, 4 Assists, 4 Rebounds, 3 Steals; John Hartsell - 11 Points, 8 Rebounds. The Predators shot nearly 58% for the game and allowed only 2 points over the last 3:15 of the contest.
TUCSON (W 79-69)
John Hartsell - 21 Points, 12 Rebounds; Curtis Burrell - 20 Points, 2 Rebounds, 2 Assists; Bryan Moreno - 16 Points, 3 Rebounds; Team - Overcame 14 Turnovers by limiting the Rejects to 42% Shooting and with a 42-23 Rebounding Edge. The Predators finished the game on a 9-2 run over the last five minutes.
NEW YORK CITY (W 84-65)
Curtis Burrell - 22 Points, 9/15 Shooting; John Hartsell - 17 Points, 9 Rebounds; Kevin Wilkinson - 15 Points, 13 Rebounds, 7 Turnovers; Team - Overcame 15 Turnovers with 50% Shooting, 18 FT's, and a 45-22 Rebounding Edge. The Predators took a 21-point lead into Halftime after a 26-9 run to close the First Half.
EUGENE (L 81-58)
Bryan Moreno - 18 Points, 9/15 Shooting; Curtis Burrell - 12 Points, 6/16 Shooting, 3 Assists, 5 Turnovers. The Predators were badly outrebounded, turned the ball over 12 times, did not make a single free throw in the game, and were already behind by 15 at Halftime.
OLYMPIA (L 80-72)
Curtis Burrell - 31 Points, 4 Assists, 11/24 Shooting. No other Predator scored more than 8 Points. The Chum hit 22 FT's and got 29 Points from Randall Beaudoin to get the win. The Preds only trailed by 2 at Halftime, but failed to score a single point after a 6-minute span early in the Second Half, which cost them the game.
ROSWELL (L 76-66)
Bryan Moreno - 18 Points, 2 Steals, Only 9/21 Shooting; John Hartsell - 14 Points, 3 Rebounds. Stunningly, the Predators shot only 40%, got outrebounded by a horrible rebounding team, and only scored 29 points in the Second Half to lose to Roswell for the first time in 13 seasons.
The Preds' finished a dismal regular season at 8-7 and a #128 ranking, good for only fourth place in the conference. Fourth place was Long Beach's lowest finish in the conference since my very first season way back in Season 26.
(QUARTERFINALS)
#5 SALEM (W 92-53)
Curtis Burrell - 22 Points, 11/17 Shooting; Ronald Brown - 11 Points, 13 Rebounds; Matthew Carrasco - 12 Points and 2 Steals in 15 Minutes off the bench; Team - 60% Shooting, 46-16 Rebounding Edge. The Preds had buried Salem by Halftime (46-22) and took out their frustrations from the three-game division losing streak by pounding the helpless Spavins
into submission for the team's most lopsided win of the season. The bench contributed 33 Points on top of the team's blistering shooting and mind-boggling rebounding advantage.
(SEMIFINALS)
#1 EUGENE (L 87-68)
Curtis Burrell - 20 Points, 8/12 Shooting; Bryan Moreno - 15 Points, 6/9 Shooting. The Predators shot over 59% for the game but only took 47 shots to 70 for the Ducks. Eugene held a 33-16 Rebounding Edge and nailed 7 three-pointers to put the game away in a hurry. This would mark the first since Season 31 that the Predators failed to reach the C31 championship game.
The Predators then lost to Tucson for the first time since Season 26 to fall to 9-9 with a #127 ranking. This dropped Long Beach into the Regional Tournament (Tier 3) for the first time since my first season in Season 26. Long Beach actually nearly made it to the NTT despite the horrible record, losing the final of the play-in game to Silver City by two points. This was the first time in 14 seasons that the Predators were left out of the Big Dance.
(FIRST ROUND)
#16 ANCHORAGE (W 87-70)
Curtis Burrell - 23 Points, 4 Assists; Bryan Moreno - 21 Points, 8 Rebounds. The Predators finished the game on a 30-16 run as Anchorage couldn't hit the long ball, only hitting 6 of 24 from beyond the arc.
(SECOND ROUND)
#9 OMAHA (W 75-73)
Curtis Burrell - 21 Points, 8/18 Shooting; John Hartsell - 13 Points, 8 Rebounds, 3 Blocks. The Predators went on a 12-0 run midway through the Second Half and survived two Omaha three-pointers in the last 19 seconds in a very statistically even game.
(THIRD ROUND)
#5 CASPER (L 89-70)
Curtis Burrell - 22 Points, 11/21 Shooting; Bryan Moreno/John Hartsell/Ronald Brown - 10 Points Each. The Predators couldn't contain the Sarku attack, allowing Casper to shoot 56% for the game, and after taking a 9-point lead at Halftime, the Sarkus went on a 23-10 run in the first 6 minutes of the Second Half to essentially put the game away.
Long Beach defeated Macon in the fourth consolation game, but lost to Wilkes-Barre by 9 and St. Cloud by 6 in the final two games to fall to 12-12 with a final ranking of #110, my worst record ever as coach of this team coming in my last season coaching it. I also did not get the elusive 300th overall win. After 16 seasons, I finished 299-109 as head coach of the Predators.
CONFERENCE AWARDS: Curtis Burrell - First Team All-Conference (Third Time, Burrell became only the fifth Predator to be named to the First Team three times or more).
NORTHWEST REGION: Morgantown Shangri-Las (#1 Seed) - Defeated Fargo Muffin Men (#6 Seed), 85-80.
SOUTHWEST REGION: Fort Worth Beavers (#2 Seed) - Defeated Dayton Wizzards (#13 Seed), 85-55.
NORTHEAST REGION: Eugene Fighting Ducks (#5 Seed) - Defeated Stamford Green Griffins (#7 Seed), 83-81 in Overtime.

NATIONAL SEMIFINAL I: Fort Worth Beavers - Defeated Morgantown Shangri-Las, 76-75.
NATIONAL SEMIFINAL II: Twin Falls Tricksters - Defeated Eugene Fighting Ducks, 75-61.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Twin Falls Tricksters - Defeated Fort Worth Beavers, 83-56.
(The Tricksters raced out to a 20-point halftime lead and capped off a perfect undefeated season with their second straight national title, and their third in the last ten seasons.)
DEPARTURES:
Curtis Burrell - Spent his first season on the bench but immediately took over the PG position after Vitaly Kolesnik graduated and held down the starting role for the last three seasons. Scored exactly 500 Points in his Senior year and finished 5th on the school's all-time Points list with 1709 (17.8 PPG), just 28 fewer than fourth-place Chris Diaz. Was a 54% career shooter as well. Was never a
prolific passer because he did a lot of the shooting and ball-handling himself and was never that great defensively, but he was consistently the team's most feared offensive threat night in and night out.
Reuben Canfield - Canfield was mostly a reserve forward who started during his Junior year but lost that job during his Senior year and wound up playing about two and a half seasons coming off the bench. Canfield had issues with ball-handling, but was otherwise very solid. Pulled down 376 Rebounds, swiped 70 Steals, and blocked 38 Shots in 96 games.
Kevin Wilkinson - Wilkinson didn't play in his first year and was a reserve guard for the next two and a half seasons before getting to start during the latter part of his Senior year. Wilkinson was a superb rebounder for a 6'5" guy, finishing with 229 Rebounds for his career, grabbing 153 of those (6.4 RPG), second-best on the team, during his final season.
