Current Season Overview

Despite a lot of uncertainty heading into signing day, the Avalanche landed a 52/36 class, headed by new 6'10" stud center Delmonte Davis. Davis, a local product from Region 21, averaged over 17 PPG on 54% shooting in High School, while also establishing himself as a defensive force. Davis should be a dominant player from the get-go, and gives the Avs their first impact big man in a long time. The other two recruits were technically "walk-ons", but were players that I had targeted and fell to Boulder after other teams signed other players. 6'7" Adam Ammerman is a good shooter, a solid defender, and a good ball-handler who will get a chance to compete for the starting SF spot right away. And 6'8" Ronnie Bivona doesn't have awe-inspiring ratings, but he is a 55% shooter, and should get plenty of minutes off the bench.

GAME SNAPSHOTS

Regular Season Games

SAN ANTONIO (W 109-73)
Lewis Hansen - 33 Points, 13/21 Shooting, 29 of 33 Points came in the First Half; Leon Herd - 15 Points, 6 Assists; Adam Ammerman - 15 Points, 3 Rebounds, 2 Blocks in College Debut; Delmonte Davis - 10 Points, 10 Rebounds, 2 Steals in College Debut. The Avs went on a 13-0 run over the last three minutes before Halftime to break the game open and head into the locker room ahead by 18. Boulder shot 63% for the game, outrebounded the Storm 36-19, and only turned the ball over twice. The 109 points matched the school record for the most the Avs have scored in one game.

BURBANK (W 98-90)
Leon Herd - 28 Points, 13/20 Shooting; Lewis Hansen - 25 Points, 4 Steals; Delmonte Davis - 12 Points, 5 Rebounds, 3 Steals; Team - 54% Shooting, 24/33 FT's. Two high-powered offenses went back and forth all evening until the Avs' defense finally clamped down and shut out the Stealth over the last 3:23 of the game, enabling Boulder to score the game's final 10 points. The Avs forced 4 turnovers over the game-ending stretch.

LAKE TAHOE (W 91-64)
Lewis Hansen - 24 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Steals; Leon Herd - 24 Points, 3 Assists. The Sarvsters used a big early rebounding advantage to keep the game close, but the Avs' defense was simply too tough. Lake Tahoe shot only 34% for the game and coughed the ball up 16 times. The Avs finished the game on a 24-9 run over the final 10 minutes. The victory marked Boulder's first 3-0 start since Season 40.

FARGO (W 81-72)
Leon Herd - 27 Points, 3 Rebounds, 12/21 Shooting, 8 Turnovers; Lewis Hansen - 17 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals; Oscar Loggins - 15 Points in 11 Minutes off the bench. The Terpz did a great job in slowing down the Avs' high-powered offense, frustrating Herd into 8 turnovers and holding the Avs under 50% shooting for the first time on the season. But Reece Bolden converted a huge three-point play with 1:34 to go giving Boulder a five-point lead, and the Avs converted six free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

AURORA (W 82-68)
Leon Herd - 27 Points, 4 Steals, 9/14 Shooting; Lewis Hansen - 15 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals; Delmonte Davis - 13 Points, 5 Rebounds; Oscar Loggins - 14 Points in 13 Minutes off the bench. This game was a tale of two halves. The Falcons had the better of play in the first half, playing stifling defense and entering the intermission ahead 38-30. But the Avs' defense stepped up after halftime, allowing time for the offense to get rolling. When the dust settled, Boulder had outscored Aurora 52-30 in the Second Half. A 9-0 run late in the game after the Falcons had closed within 4 sealed the deal. The Avs started a season at 5-0 for the first time since Season 39, and were ranked #2 in the first rankings of the season.

DENVER (W 89-77)
Leon Herd - 24 Points, 6 Assists; Delmonte Davis - 18 Points, 9 Rebounds; Lewis Hansen - 17 Points, 2 Assists. The Avs built up an 11-point lead at Halftime, and while a stubborn Eels team got within 6 on multiple occassions after the intermission, they never got any closer. Denver was held to just 4 points over the last 3:20 of the game. The victory moved Boulder into the #1 ranking in the league.

CLEARWATER (L 73-72 2OT)
Leon Herd - 17 Points, 3 Assists, 7 Turnovers; Delmonte Davis - 17 Points, 4 Rebounds, 3 Steals; Lewis Hansen - 14 Points, 6 Rebounds, 3 Assists. Boulder ripped through the Black Labels' normally stifling defense early on and led 44-27 at the half. But the Avs seemingly ran into a brick wall beyond that point and couldn't get out of their own way. The 17-point lead vanished after Clearwater outscored Boulder 34-17 in the Second Half, with Herd missing a chance at the end of regulation to win it. Herd missed another chance to break the tie at the end of the first overtime, and both Terry Jones and Cherokee Evans missed in the final 22 seconds to clinch victory for the Labels. The Avs finished with a whopping 22 turnovers on 13 Clearwater steals, and shot only 42% for the game. Herd and Hansen in particular combined to shoot only 11/32, with Clearwater's superstar Julius Lang scoring 30 points.

ASPEN (W 104-70)
Delmonte Davis - 23 Points, 7 Rebounds, 3 Assists; Lewis Hansen - 23 Points, 5 Assists, 3 Rebounds, 2 Blocks; Leon Herd - 19 Points, 4 Steals; Adam Ammerman - 15 Points, 6 Assists, 4 Rebounds; Team - 61% Shooting, Only 3 Turnovers after 22 the game before. The Avs' blistered the Aspen defense and took much better care of the ball in racing out to a 66-30 lead at Halftime. The Avs scored 104 points without even attempting a single three-point shot.

ABERDEEN (W 102-73)
Leon Herd - 31 Points, 11/18 Shooting; Adam Ammerman - 17 Points, 7/9 Shooting; Oscar Loggins - 17 Points in 18 Minutes off the bench; Lewis Hansen - 15 Points, 3 Assists, 3 Steals. The Avs scored the first 10 points of the game and were ahead 31-10 after only 7 minutes. Boulder hit 56% of their shots and even hit 6 of 8 three pointers.

BOISE (L 83-75)
Leon Herd - 23 Points, 5 Rebounds, 3 Assists; Lewis Hansen - 23 Points, 11/19 Shooting. The Buccaneers erased a 10-point Second Half deficit and outscored the Avs 10-2 over the last four minutes of the game. Boise outrebounded Boulder 39-31 and hit 19 free throws to just 5 for the Avs. This was Boulder's first loss to Boise in sixteen seasons.

KEYSTONE (L 99-89)
Lewis Hansen - 29 Points, 12/17 Shooting; Leon Herd - 25 Points, 4 Steals. The Avs trailed by 9 at Halftime but took the lead with a big spurt early in the Second Half. But the #1-ranked Magic quickly reasserted themselves and burst out to a 12-point lead with ten minutes to play and the Avs never threatened again. Keystone outrebounded Boulder 31-20, hit 59% of their shots, and sank 21 free throws.

LARAMIE (W 84-69)
Lewis Hansen - 22 Points, 9/13 Shooting; Oscar Loggins - 20 Points in 11 Minutes off the bench; Leon Herd - 17 Points, 3 Assists, 3 Rebounds. The Avs broke open a 9-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play and didn't let the previously 18th-ranked Fighting Irish to get any closer than 8 the rest of the way. The Boulder defense limited the Irish to just 3 points over the last 6 minutes.

FARGO (W 90-73)
Lewis Hansen - 25 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Steals; Leon Herd - 19 Points, 3 Steals; Delmonte Davis - 16 Points, 4 Rebounds, 3 Blocks. Despite conceding 23 free throws, the Avalanche clamped down again in the Second Half and again in the final minutes. Boulder outscored Fargo 43-33 after Halftime and 11-1 over the final 5 minutes.

AURORA (L 83-80)
Leon Herd - 20 Points, 8/17 Shooting; Lewis Hansen - 18 Points, 4 Rebounds; Delmonte Davis - 14 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Blocks. The Avs trailed throughout the entire Second Half and yet despite two turnovers in the final two minutes, Boulder still had a chance to force overtime, but Herd missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

DENVER (W 95-90 OT)
Leon Herd - 32 Points, 13/22 Shooting; Lewis Hansen - 23 Points, 5 Assists, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals; Delmonte Davis - 14 Points, 6 Rebounds, 5 Steals. The Avs looked sunk when they were down by 6 in the final minute, but Adam Ammerman hit a triple with 21 seconds left and Herd hit another just before the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The Fighting Eels then scored only 2 points over the last three minutes of the extra period allowing Boulder to escape with the victory. Herd surpassed Adrian Worthington for third place on Boulder's all-time scoring list in this game.

Boulder finished the regular season at 11-4 with a ranking of #38, but only good enough for third place in the conference.

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT (#3 SEED)

(QUARTERFINALS)
#6 FARGO (W 93-79)
Leon Herd - 30 Points, 3 Assists; Lewis Hansen - 22 Points, 2 Rebounds, 2 Assists. It seemed like neither team could miss in the First Half with the Terpz leading 55-51 at the intermission, but the Avs clamped down after the break and went on a 22-8 run over the first 10 minutes of the Second Half. Boulder wound up outscoring Fargo 42-24 after halftime.

(SEMIFINALS)
#2 AURORA (W 89-74)
Lewis Hansen - 26 Points, 5 Rebounds; Leon Herd - 19 Points, 2 Steals; Adam Ammerman - 12 Points, 7 Rebounds. The Avalanche were outrebounded 45-31 but their defense was in top form on this night, forcing 14 turnovers and limiting the Falcons to a dreadful 37% shooting performance. The Avs doubled up the Falcons 20-10 over the final ten minutes and outscored them 43-31 in the Second Half overall.

(CHAMPIONSHIP)
#1 KEYSTONE (L 86-69)
Leon Herd - 17 Points, 8/19 Shooting; Delmonte Davis - 14 Points, 4 Rebounds. The Avalanche never gave themselves a chance in the Championship Game, conceding the first 12 points and falling behind 53-36 at the Half. Any hope of a miracle comeback was dashed when the Avs scored only 11 points over the last 11 minutes. Boulder shot only 43% for the game while Keystone hit 57% and nailed 8 three-pointers. Boulder lost the C21 title game for the third season in a row, and for fifth time in the last six seasons.

Boulder still managed to reach the NTT in my final season, entering the Big Dance with a 13-5 record and a ranking of #34.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT (#9 SEED)

(FIRST ROUND)
#8 FRESNO (L 90-86)
Delmonte Davis - 25 Points, 9 Rebounds; Lewis Hansen - 24 Points, 6 Rebounds; Leon Herd - 16 Points, 4 Rebounds. My final NTT run turned out to be a short one, as the Titans' shooters came out on fire and sparked Fresno to a 59-39 lead at Halftime. The Avs stunningly came all the way back and took the lead with about 11 minutes to play, but Fresno's slumbering offense woke up and held off one last Boulder rally at the end. Three-point shooting was the difference as the Titans nailed 11 of 21 shots from long range, and five of their players scored at least 11 points.

The Avalanche finished my final season with a record of 16-8, going 3-2 over the remaining five consolation games. Boulder comfortably defeated Riverside, Utica, and Carnegie, but fell hard to Silver City and narrowly lost a high-scoring shootout to Ft. Myers in the finale. The Avs' final high power ranking was #25. I retired with a final coaching record of 337-167 over 21 seasons.

CONFERENCE AWARDS: Lewis Hansen - ALL-LEAGUE Fourth Team (2nd All-League award), CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (Second Time, 2nd player in Boulder history to win this twice), First Team All-Conference (Fourth Time, 2nd player in Boulder history to earn this award in all four seasons); Leon Herd - First Team All-Conference (Third Time, 4th player in Boulder history to earn this award three times).

THE NTT FINAL FOUR

NORTHWEST REGION: Wilkes-Barre Roamin' Legion (#5 Seed) - Defeated New York City Dark Wolves (#3 Seed), 83-73.
SOUTHWEST REGION: Syracuse Defenders (#12 Seed) - Defeated Aurora Falcons (#6 Seed), 84-83.
NORTHEAST REGION: Green Bay Spaztic Wenches (#3 Seed) - Defeated Keystone Magic (#1 Seed), 98-85.

NATIONAL SEMIFINAL I: Syracuse Defenders - Defeated Wilkes-Barre Roamin' Legion, 78-67.
NATIONAL SEMIFINAL II: Green Bay Spaztic Wenches - Defeated Arlington Running Utes, 79-75.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Syracuse Defenders - Defeated Green Bay Spaztic Wenches, 77-68.
(The Defenders lived up to their nickname in shutting down Green Bay's high-powered offense to cap off an absolutely improbable run from a 12th-seed to their first national championship.)

DEPARTURES:
Lewis Hansen - A dynamic do-it-all player, Hansen will go down as one of Boulder's all-time greats. A two-time Conference Player of the Year and twice named to an All-League team, Hansen finished his career with 1831 Points, fifth on the school's all-time list (8 shy of Adrian Worthington for fourth). A testament to his defensive ability, his 124 Steals were third best in school history. He also finished with 224 Assists against just 64 Turnovers, and finished his career as a 55% shooter.
Leon Herd - A pure scoring point guard, Herd's 2031 Points are the second most scored by an Avalanche player in school history, behind only the venerable Gary Giles. Leon dished out 167 Assists and swiped 104 Steals during his 96 games in college. A deadly shooter his whole career, Leon shot 54% overall and 43% from long range.
Oscar Loggins - A pure offensive sparkplug off the bench, Loggins really took off in his last two seasons in a Boulder uniform. Never started a game in his career, but played in all 96 games, scored 662 Points, and shot 54% overall.
